SYDNEY: The football administrator thus has been under fire for his behaviour during the celebrations.

The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales (45), has apologised for kissing Jennifer Hermoso, during the celebrations of their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup triumph.

Spain lifted their first-ever women’s world cup trophy after defeating England 1-0 in the final at the Accor Stadium, Australia on Sunday 20 August.

During the podium celebration as the players were being embraced for their heroics, the FA boss kissed Hermoso, on the lips and the moment sent shock waves across the world over the media.

Subsequently, on Monday 21 August evening, the FA boss sent out a video apologising for the infamous moment that is overshadowing the world cup success.

Rubiales said that he made a mistake for sure. “I have to accept it in a moment such emotion, without any bad faith what happened in a very spontaneous way, no bad faith from either side,’ Rubiales said.

The football administrator thus has been under fire for his behaviour during the celebrations. Now the football federation instead of basking in the glory of their team’s success are weathering a social media storm calling for the head of Rubiales.

There are underlying issues to the bad public relations the Spanish side is facing despite being crowned world champions. Before the world cup began prior to the squad being selected 15 senior players voiced their concerns about the climate in the Spanish dressing room, they subsequently did not available themselves for selection, however, eight of them changed their minds and of that eight only three made it to the world cup.

That has enraged some quarters and after the final head coach Jorge Vilda was booed by a section of fans regardless of delivering the results. Rubiales backed Vilda all the way and now that stance may be playing a role in his public condemnation.

The player who was kissed Hermoso downplayed the incident and said that it wasn’t a big deal and said that it was an emotion of the moment.
