0 JOHANNESBURG: A week ago the club then had an independently chaired disciplinary hearing.
The DSTV Premiership side Moroka Swallows has informed 22 players (see their names here) it has dismissed earlier this year that they will only be compensated for only 14 days they showed up for work.
In December 2023, the players went on a strike over unpaid salaries. The Soweto club has been in a financial tug of war with its players.
As a result, the Birds could not honour two of their premier league fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.
Through its Disciplinary Committee (DC), the Premier Soccer League (PSL) slapped the club with a hefty R1 million fine (with R600 000 of which suspended for two-years provided the club does not commit a similar offence in that period) for misconduct and bringing the league into disrepute.
In addition to the monetary punishment, Swallows’ opponents Sundowns and Arrows were given 3-0 walk-over wins by the PSL DC.
Following the aforementioned events, a week ago the club then had an independently chaired disciplinary hearing, which recommended that the players be dismissed for their actions.
Acting on those recommendations, Swallows informed the players that their services are no longer needed.
Now the club has written to the players to inform them that they would be paid for 14 days and their clearances from the club are available for collection, provided that they return the club’s equipment and/or assets in their possession.
With the league about two weeks away from resuming, it would be interesting to see how Swallows rebuild their nest, negotiate the remaining fixtures, hope to move away from 11th position and enter the Top 8, and continue to compete in the league without the services of 22 players.
