ICELAND: The prolific marksman capped the special night with an 89th-minute goal, giving Portugal a 1-0 victory.

Guinness World Records has recognised Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for becoming the first male player to make 200 international appearances. Ronaldo was honoured with a certificate prior to the kick-off of the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship – better known as the Euro 2024 – qualifier between Portugal and Iceland at Laugardalsvöllur Stadium Iceland, on 20 June 2023.

The prolific marksman capped the special night with an 89th-minute goal, giving Portugal a 1-0 victory. The win has given the Portuguese firm control of Group J, as they have collected 12 points from four games.

The Al Nassr forward, who scored his 123rd goal for Portugal, made his international debut in 2003 aged 18. Henceforth, he has been a constant presence in the national team.

The former Real Madrid forward is an indispensable player in the history of his nation. In 2016, he became the first Portuguese captain to deliver an international trophy, namely the Euro.

About three years later, Ronaldo, who holds a record of highest professional goals of 838, also became an inaugural winner of the UEFA Nations League. Hence, he is regarded as Portugal’s all-time best player.

Since making it into professional football, the winger-turned-striker has set and broken every possible record. Other notable records he has set and broken include the most UEFA Champions League goals (140) and the most goals for Real Madrid (451).

As it stands, every goal he scores, be it for Portugal or Al Nassr, sets a new record and there are no signs of stopping the 38-year-old, as he continues to lead his country at an age at which many players have retired from both international and club football.

This speaks of his passion, hunger, discipline and hard work. Incidentally, Ronaldo remains a consummate professional who takes care of his body, thereby prolonging his playing days.
