PARIS: The 31-year-old has three years left in his contract with the Ligue 1 champions. This means his contract has to be bought out.

Brazilian forward Neymar da Silva Santos Junior, commonly known as Neymar Jr, has informed Paris Saint Germain (PSG) that he wants out of the club, according to a report by Sky Sports.

The 31-year-old has three years left in his contract with the Ligue 1 champions. This means his contract has to be bought out. In 2017, PSG spent a record-breaking fee of €222 million (R4,5 billion) to lure the former Barcelona man to Paris, France.

Therefore, it is very unlikely that they would let him go for free; someone has to break the bank for him to leave the club.

Neymar Jr had a relatively good 2022/23 season, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists in 20 appearances. While preparing for a 2023/24 season with his club, he scored a brace in a club friendly against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC, a club from South Korea.

Reports suggest that Neymar could make a dramatic return to Spanish giants, Barcelona, or head to Chelsea, an English Premiership club.

The Parisians are currently having a stormy transfer market with marquee players leaving or seeking to leave the club. They lost Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos for free. The duo, in all fairness to them, had joined the club on free deals. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe’s contractual saga continues to be a public headache for PSG.

A relationship between the player and the club is reportedly frosty. Mbappe’s decision not to extend his contract, which is set to expire in 2024, was not well received by the club, who are not keen to lose him for free next year. Subsequently, PSG seeks to sell the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner.

The club had accepted a record €300 million (R 5,9 billion) bid from a Saudi Professional League (SPL) club, Al Hilal. However, Mbappe, who is keen on finishing the last year remaining on his contract, rejected talks with the Saudis. As the contractual saga drags on, the player is out in the cold at PSG; he is not training with the senior team.
