JOHANNESBURG: The goalless draw was enough to secure the second spot for Hugo Broos and his charges.

Bafana Bafana held their nerves to secure a point in order for them to advance to the last 16 of the 2023 TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations.

South Africa and Tunisia played to a cagey stalemate with neither side managing to find the back of the net in a tight Group E encounter at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo City, Ivory Coast on Wednesday night.

In a match were both teams created enough chances to trouble the other, but lacked that venom to unlock the other. It is no surprise that the match only produced a combined four shots on target with goalkeepers having to do very little.

Tunisia left it too late to try and create a spark as their best chances came at the closing moments of the match, but Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams, stood his ground.

Players had to put industrious shifts as it was not easy in the park. One such player was Sundowns’ Themba Zwane, who earned back-to-back man of the match accolades for his hard work in making Bafana Bafana tick going forward.

The goalless draw was enough to secure the second spot for Hugo Broos and his charges, who will cross swords with Group F winners Morocco in the last 16.

Interestingly, Group E’s simultaneous final group matches produced the first and second scoreless draws in the tournament thus far.

As Mali and Namibia also could not be separated with their match also ending 0-0. After all was said and done in Group E, the Eagles of Mali won the group with five points, followed by Bafana with four, but equal with Namibia on points.

South Africa, however, is ahead in terms of head-to-head as they hammered their neighbours 4-0 in their previous meeting. With that being said, Namibia have also advanced to the last 16 as they finished as one of the best third-placed teams.
