JOHANNESBURG: This was a Group K top-of-the-table clash as part of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Bafana Bafana convincingly defeated Morocco, ranked first in Africa and eleventh in the world, 2-1 in an exciting encounter on Saturday at the FNB Stadium. This was a Group K top-of-the-table clash as part of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

As things stand, South Africa is at the top of Group K with 7 points and Morocco is second with 6 points, but the North Africans have another match to play in September against Liberia. Bafana scored in both halves to register the famous win over the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists.

The home team took the lead early on when the Moroccan keeper made a blunder while trying to catch Percy Tau’s cross. He made a meal out of it and deflected the ball into his own net.

Zakhele Lepasa scored the second goal in the second half while Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech pulled one back for the North Africans also in the second half. The victory is the first one in over two decades for South Africa against the Atlas Lions.

It was fireworks from the get-go by the home team, who turned on the magic and displayed one of their best performances in a long while. The match did not seem like a dead rubber, as both countries have already qualified for the 2023 AFCON, which will be hosted by the Ivory Coast in January 2024.

In his post-match interview, the Belgian tactician Hugo Broos said he was impressed by the players’ performance more than the results. His charges were on song and had fluidity going forward and looked threatening with every attack, thus giving the over 50 000 fans something to cheer them on.

Alongside a 2022/23 DSTV Premiership Footballer of the season, Teboho Mokoena, debutant TS Galaxy midfielder Bathusi Aubaas had a blinder of a game. It was one of Tau’s best performances in recent times. The Al Ahly SC forward, who has just won the CAF champions league with the Egyptian giants, is in great form at the moment.
