JOHANNESBURG: The Belgian compared the working environment and support he received while he was coaching Cameroon.
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos’ frustrations with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and clubs over their non-committal indication to grant him access to coaches continue.
Broos spoke candidly with members of the media about a lack of both relationship and collaboration between the PSL and Bafana Bafana following a disappointing display against Eswatini in an international friendly at the FNB Stadium on Friday.
A toothless Bafana Bafana drew 0-0 with their low-ranked neighbours in the match that was used as preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month and the African Cup of Nation (AFCON) next year.
The Belgian compared the working environment and support he received while he was coaching Cameroon, with which he won the AFCON in 2017, and in South Africa.
The coach detailed several times in which he sought a meeting with PSL coaches in vain and how the PSL has been standing in his way.
“To give you an example I was two weeks in Cameroon and asked for a meeting with the coaches, and they were all there. Here I did already four attempts. And I am not blaming the coaches, I did four attempts. Four times it’s postponed by PSL,” explained Broos. “Here” he went further, “it’s different, so there everything moves for the national team, here the national team has to move for the PSL. I am sorry there is no collaboration.”
It appears that there is an ongoing cold war either between Broos and the PSL, or between the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the PSL. The Bafana coach mentioned that it is hard to get PSL players on time due to club commitments.
To elucidate Broos’ point, Bafana Bafana has an important fixture with the Ivory Coast on Tuesday, 17 October. The following day, the newly launched Carling Knockout Cup kicks off.
Currently, the national team is in Cote d’Ivoire for an international friendly with the hosts of next year’s edition of AFCON. Broos has to get his team firing again and build the necessary momentum and confidence needed to do well on a bigger stage.
