MUNICH: The clash between the two colossal Europe giants would be the second match of Group A.

Manchester United and Bayern Munich will collide in a blockbuster UEFA Champions League Group A encounter at the Allianz Arena, Germany, today. This is one of the headline encounters for match day 1 as the former kings of Europe, who have a combined nine Champions League trophies, cross swords.

The form guide points to a Bayern win. Thomas Tuchel’s side is undefeated in their past four League matches, winning three and drawing their last one 2-2 against Bayer Leverkusen. In contrast, Manchester United have a mixed bag of results. They have won two of their five league matches and lost three, with their recent one being a 3-1 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion. Can Ten Hag’s charges change their fortunes around and find a way to win in Munich?

The home side, Bayern, who are riding the favourites tag in the clash against misfiring Erik Ten Hag’s United, have a good home record in Europe and would want to defend it. The Bavarians are undefeated in 34 home matches in the Champions League and have won their last 13 in a row. The six-time European champions would want to ruin Ten Hag’s homecoming in Munich, where he spent two seasons at the helm of the Bavarians’ reserve side.

In terms of head-to-head, the two European giants have met 11 times in all competitions and the Germans have registered more wins, beating United four times, drawing five and losing two against their English enemies. It is a daunting trip for the Manchester club who have not won against Bayern away in five attempts; they have lost three times and drew twice.

This statistic gives Tuchel the edge over Ten Hag. Another factor that gives Bayern the advantage going to the match is that their forwards have netted 11 times in their last four matches while United have conceded 10 goals in their last five matches. Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane, who has found his feet in Germany, has scored five goals against the Red Devils and would want to add to that tally, of course.

The clash between the two colossal Europe giants would be the second match of Group A, as Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen will open the group earlier on the same date.
