In a strategic effort to strengthen South Africa’s construction sector, the Construction Industry Development Board (cidb), in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), has launched a fully funded Certificate in Construction Management programme aimed at Grade 2–6 contractors.

This initiative comes at a critical time when the industry continues to face challenges related to project management capacity, skills shortages, and the need for improved efficiency among emerging contractors. By targeting contractors within Grades 2 to 6, the programme focuses on businesses that are in the growth phase and require structured support to scale sustainably.

The programme is designed to equip participants with essential competencies in construction management, including project planning, financial management, compliance, and operational execution. Through a combination of academic rigour and practical application, contractors will gain tools to enhance their performance, improve project delivery, and position themselves more competitively in the market.

One of the key benefits of the programme is that it is fully funded, removing financial barriers that often limit access to quality training. In addition, participants will earn 10 CPD points, contributing to their professional development and industry recognition.

Beyond individual growth, this initiative is expected to have a broader impact on the construction ecosystem. By developing more capable contractors, the programme contributes to improved infrastructure delivery, job creation, and the transformation of the sector.

The partnership between the cidb and the University of Johannesburg underscores the importance of collaboration between regulatory bodies and academic institutions in driving meaningful industry change. It reflects a shared vision of building a skilled, resilient, and inclusive construction industry that can support South Africa’s long-term economic development.

Contractors who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to invest in their growth and future success.
