Turffontein: The Amapiano genre played an important role in shaping DJ Stopper’s musical identity.
Nkululeko Mphephoka, aka DJ Stopper, is a testament to the transformative power of self-discovery and determination in the world of music. Hailing from the vibrant streets of Turffontein in Johannesburg, his journey Is a compelling narrative of resilience and passion.
“I’m Nkululeko Mphephoka, born and raised in Turffontein, Joburg South by my grandma,” he shares confidently. “The name DJ Stopper came about when I recognized my potential and truly believed that I’m a show stopper. Making people dance is what I do best.”
While his love for music primarily led him down various paths, from attempting to be a rapper to exploring different DJ personas, it wasn’t until he discovered the world of DJing and received sponsorship for formal training that he found his true calling. “I knew this was the one thing I wanted to do, and I’ll give it my best,” he declares with determination.
The Amapiano genre played an important role in shaping DJ Stopper’s musical identity. Reflecting on his early experiences, he says, “My first encounter with music that left a lasting impression was tapping into the music industry, and not just any genre—it was Amapiano.” Working at a bar frequented by artists like DBN Gogo, Major League, DJ Maphorisa, Kabza the Small, and Kelvin Momo, he absorbed inspiration and knowledge.

“Personalities like DBN Gogo, Major League, DJ Maphorisa, Kabza the Small, and Kelvin Momo inspired me so much. I wanted to be where they are, part of the culture, playing at the places they played, and feeling part of the movement,” he explains.
Conquering his fears, DJ Stopper embraced DJing lessons and persisted, fueled by positive feedback and the joy of making people dance whenever he manned the decks. Collaborations with industry heavyweights, including Major League and DBN Gogo, marked significant milestones. Reflecting on these moments, he notes, “Working with Major League and DBN Gogo changed my life and had a profound impact.”
A standout moment was the collaboration with DBN Gogo on the track “Bells,” a life-changing experience. “We made sure we dropped a banging hit track,” he recalls proudly. The journey from local venues to performing for approximately 90,000 people in a stadium felt like a dream. “It reminded me of where I started to where I am right now at that point,” he reminisces.
As DJ Stopper’s popularity grows, he remains committed to humility and excellence in every performance. “It grows every day and gets bigger and bigger,” he acknowledges. “I strive to stay humble and give my best whenever performing.”
His advice for aspiring artists is straightforward yet impactful: “Never give up, pursue what you want, and share your craft through music.” Looking ahead, DJ Stopper envisions playing on global stages at major concerts and collaborating with artists from diverse genres. His story represents the potential for local talent to ascend to international stardom through passion, dedication, and self-belief.
