JOHANNESBURG: Pirates snatched him as a free agent following a non-renewal of his contract by the DSTV Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
Orlando Pirates have announced the signing of former Mamelodi Sundowns player Lesedi Kapinga on a three-year deal ahead of a 2023/24 season. Pirates snatched him as a free agent following a non-renewal of his contract by the DSTV Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Limpopo-born player was linked with the two Soweto giants: Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
He has expressed his delight to join the Buccaneers’ ship thus: “I am not much of a talker because talk is cheap. All I’m focused on is to start training and working my way back to playing the game that I love”.
Kapinga had a tough time at the Brazilians as he struggled for a game time. He only made six appearances for Rulani Mokwena’s side in the 2022/23 season.
The Happy People have made a couple of signings ahead of the new season as they will be competing both locally and continentally. Kapinga would have to work hard to crack the nod into Jose Riveiro’s side, which has plenty of quality players in the middle of the park.
Kapinga was recently part of coach Morena Ramoreboli’s COSAFA Cup squad that claimed bronze in the regional tournament. He made four appearances for Bafana Bafana on their way to the top-three finish. The new signing would start training with his new teammates this week.
Pirates who were in a pre-season camp in Europe, Spain to be precise, where they played three friendly games are back in the country.
