MELBOURNE: The two-time World Cup winners crushed the North Africans 6-0 in what was largely a one-sided affair.

Germany showed no mercy to the World Cup debutants, Morocco, in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup’s Group H opening fixture at the Rectangular Stadium in Melbourne yesterday.

The two-time World Cup winners crushed the North Africans 6-0 in what was largely a one-sided affair. Germany dominated the match with over 75% ball possession and they made it count by converting their chances. Precisely, they had seven shots on target, six of which resulted in goals.

It was a baptism of fire for Morocco in their first-ever World Cup game.

Veteran striker Alexandra Popp starred for the Germans in the first half with a brace, as Morocco offered little resistance to the German machine.

The worst was yet to come for Morocco in the second half. Germany continued where they had left off in the first half, with Klara Buhl scoring just 23 seconds into the second half. Thereafter, Morocco crumbled under pressure and thus made it arduous for themselves by conceding two own goals.

With five goals to the good for Germany, it went from bad to worse for the Africans. In the 90th minute, Lea Schuller put the final nail in Morocco’s coffin, as she made it 6-0.

This is the highest defeat thus far in this World Cup. Germany has put teams on notice as they are one of the favourites to go all the way in the tournament.

It was another disappointing game for Africa, as the continent is yet to taste a victory in four games. South Africa, Zambia and now Morocco have lost their opening games and Nigeria avoided a loss by playing to a goalless draw against Canada.
