0 JOHANNESBURG: Mr Mabuza succumbed to Covid-19-related complications at the age of 63.
These are the words of Mr Moses Tembe who directed the programme during Mr Jabu Mabuza’s memorial service on Monday. The event saw family and friends pay tribute to the former Eskom board chairperson and businessman.
“[Mr] Jabu Mabuza would take a bullet for his family, his family came first,” Mr Tembe said.
According to Mr Tembe, President Cyril Ramaphosa described Mr Mabuza as an individual that wore many hats including being an entrepreneur and a mentor to many people.
Echoing Mr Ramaphosa’s sentiments were President of Black Business Council, Mr Sandile Zungu, Executive Chairman of Rothschild & Co, Mr Martin Kingston, South African Billionaire, Mr Johann Rupert and Standard Bank CEO, Mr Sim Tshabalala – to name a few.
The Mabuza children Lwazi, Sakhiwo and Mbali shared fond memories of their father.
“My dad always really made time for me, even if it meant getting on a golf cart and sitting through the e-tolls so that just to have a quick conversation before catching a flight back to Cape Town,” Mbali shared.
“He would call me in the morning to say: ‘Come Mbali, let’s see what I am going to wear Mbali’, and model for me and be like: ‘Look baby, your daddy is cool’ “, Mbali reminisced.
Mr Mabuza was appointed as the board chairperson in 2018 and resigned the following year.
In his resignation letter to Mr Ramaphosa, Mr Mabuza apologised to him and deputy president, Mr David Mabuza for his inability to meet the commitments Eskom made during a meeting in December that there won’t be any load shedding until 13 January 2019.
