DSTV Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the signing of youngster Thapelo Maseko (20) from fellow Tshwane rivals SuperSport United ahead of the 2023/24 season.
The club announced the news on its social media platform thus: “The wait is over! Welcome to the Yellow Nation, Thapelo Maseko!”
Maseko, who had a breakthrough season at SuperSport United under coach Gavin Hunt, made 24 appearances and scored four goals in all competitions for Matsatsantsa a Pitori.
His stellar performances for United throughout the season earned him a first international call-up for Bafana Bafana. The young winger was part of coach Hugo Broos’ squad that defeated Morocco in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in June.
It has been reported that the Brazilians managed to snatch the youngster despite offers from abroad for his services. One of the clubs that was allegedly keen on bringing him to Europe is KV Westerlo, a Belgian side.

The league champions have already added within their ranks players such as Junior Mandieta from Stellenbosch FC, Lesiba Nku from Marumo Gallants and Brazilian Lucas Ribeiro Costa from Belgian club Waasland Beveren. With the list of quality attackers the Chloorkop-based club has in their books, Maseko will have serious competition for a place in coach Rulani Mokwena’s team.
The new signing will jet off for Europe to join Sundowns for a pre-season camp. The four signings will be welcomed additions to Rulani Mokwena, who would want to retain the league title and make it to the finals of the champions league, one place above the semi-finals disappointment of last season’s campaign.
