Mayo Signs Cape Town City Contract Extension

CAPE TOWN: Tinkler’s side had initially exercised its two-year option on Mayo’s contract and then later offered him a new one.

Cape Town City has announced that its star-striker Khanyisa Mayo has signed a new contract, which will keep him at the club until June 2028. The 24-year-old was in a rich vein of form in a 2022/23 DSTV Premiership season, finishing as a joint top-goal scorer with a Namibian and Mamelodi Sundowns striker, Peter Shalulile, on 12 goals.

Eric Tinkler’s side had initially exercised its two-year option on Mayo’s contract and then later offered him a new one. The striker’s agent Basia Micheals told SABC Sport that her client’s performance is what made City keen to keep him beyond the two-year option.

The goal-poacher was instrumental in helping the club to finish fourth in the 2022/23 DSTV Premiership. In total, he has contributed 13 goals and one assist in all competitions, thus making him an indispensable player for the Citizens.

Mayo’s exploits in front of goals have attracted interest in him from several clubs, including the Soweto Giants – Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. By keeping its lethal weapon, the City has fended them off.

With the 2022/23 DSTV Premiership having concluded over the past weekend, Mayo will now focus on Bafana Bafana, a senior South African national team, thanks to his scoring prowess. He has been included in a 34-men provisional squad, as announced yesterday.

South Africa will play host to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists, Morocco, in next month’s 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. Mayo will be hoping to impress Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos to make it into a final 23-men squad and add to his four caps.
