0 DURBAN: Mkhwanazi made the damning allegations during a media briefing in Durban.
The KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has made public WhatsApp conversations from seized cellphones that allegedly show a link between a member of a crime syndicate, an associate of the Police Minister, and Minister Senzo Mchunu himself.
Mkhwanazi made the damning allegations during a media briefing in Durban.
Mkhwanazi said attempted murder-accused, Vusumuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, had a R360-million contract with the police. Mkhwanazi says there have been WhatsApp messages between Matlala and Brown Mogotsi, an associate of Mchunu.
He said Mogotsi, in turn, allegedly communicated with Mchunu about the disbandment of the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings task team following a raid on Matlala’s house.
“Further analysis of the chats indicates that Vusimuzi Cat Matlala is financially supporting the Minister of Police and Mr Brown Mogotsi’s political endeavours. This is supported by the evidence of conversations and proof of payments for guests’ January 8th travel costs and the gala dinner in Cape Town, which took place in 2025. The proof of payment, we have it. As I’ve said, we’re going to share with you where Mister Matlala sends this proof of payment to Mister Brown Mogotsi.”
Mkhwanazi said, despite the Minister’s instruction, and the transfer of some of the dockets from the task team to political killings, the National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, instructed that the unit continue its work.
“You correctly said we’ve got a chain of command. And I’ve said before, the National Commissioner, General Masemola, is my commander and nobody else. In the province of KwaZulu-Natal, I account and report to the legislature and the executive authority in the province. Of which the premier is the one who supports us. So I must communicate via the executive authority in the province and via the national commissioner. And that’s where it ends.”
Mkhwanazi says the evidence that has been gathered so far is being discussed with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) with a view to possible charges of defeating the ends of justice.
The Police Minister says they are aware of what Mkhwanazi has said. They will, in good time, apply their minds to the statements.
