MANCHESTER: The Portuguese was given the armband at the beginning of the season.

Former Manchester United great and long-serving captain Roy Keane has questioned the current club captain’s qualities of leading the club.

Keane, who served as club captain from 1997-2001 led the Red Devils to nine major trophies, which makes the outspoken Irishman one of the most successful captains in the history of Manchester United.

The Portuguese was given the armband at the beginning of the season, to usher in a new era of United replacing Harry Maguire. But Fernandes’ reign as captain has been off to an unimpressive start as the club is struggling to keep up with the other members of the top six.

The Irish legend did not hold back on his assessment of Bruno Fernandes’ tenure as captain.

The former coach and now a TV pundit for SkySports’ was speaking on the programme Super Sunday after United suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

He said, “Today having watched him again I would take the captaincy off him 100%. I know it’s a big decision, obviously, they changed captaincy with Maguire but Fernandes is not captain material.”

He further added, “He is a talented player no doubt about it. But what I saw today we have discussed it many times before. It was last season at Liverpool his whinging his moaning and throwing his arms up constantly.”

United are in position eight with 15 points after having played 10 matches. Although Keane does not doubt the talents of the player he has made it clear that he is not the right man to captain the club, labelling him the ‘opposite’ of what he wants from a captain.

Time will tell whether Erik Ten Hag persists with Bruno as the leader in the field or someone else will be given the responsibility to marshall the troops in a challenging period for the club.
