MADRID: Rubiales has also left his position as a UEFA vice president.
Luis Rubiales has resigned from his post as a Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president following a three-week-kissing scandal involving Spanish World Cup winner Jennifer Hermoso.
The infamous incident occurred during Spain’s triumph in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in August. Rubiales has also left his position as a UEFA vice president.
The troubled football administrator released a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, detailing his current position and his change of heart. “I have presented my resignation from the position of president of the RFEF After the suspension by FIFA, plus the rest of the procedures opened against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position,” read the statement.
After the incident Rubiales, who faced mounting criticism and condemnation from the public, media and football players worldwide was resolute that he would not resign, arguing that the kiss was ‘spontaneous and mutual.’
He is currently in trouble with FIFA and legal authorities in Spain. While serving a 90-day provisional suspension from FIFA pending a decision by the disciplinary committee, Hermoso has lodged a complaint with the National Prosecutor’s offices alleging that Rubiales, kissed her on the lips without her consent.
The scandal was a blemish to Spain’s triumphant period, it significantly overshadowed the women’s heroics of winning the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The scandal shook Spain’s football as the World Cup winning Coach Jorge Vilda was sacked a week ago.
Prior to his sacking, his support staff members had all resigned on their own accord and he has now finally heeded the calls that wanted him to step away from his position as head of RFEF.
