BRISBANE: The Super Falcons, who displayed a super effort, came from a goal down to claim this monumental win.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria stunned the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosts, Australia, in a five-goal thriller at the Suncorp Stadium, Australia.

The Nigerians walked away as the 3-2 victors. The Super Falcons, who displayed a super effort, came from a goal down to claim this monumental win.

Both teams began the match testing one another, looking to strike first in the tense Group B encounter. The match came alive in the five minutes of added time before the break.

Australia took the lead through Emily van Egmond in the first minute of added time, much to the elation of the home crowd. However, the celebrations were short-lived, as Nigeria answered immediately through Uchenna Kanu in the final minute of the added time.

It was even at halftime, with both teams showing no signs of stopping. The second half delivered even more excitement and goals. Sending bodies forward, Nigeria continued from where they had left off at half-time.

The pressure paid off for the Super Falcons who scored their second goal and thus took the lead from Osinachi Ohale’s header in the 65th minute. Momentum was clearly with the Africans as Asisat Oshoala scored the third goal, making it 3-1 in the 72nd minute.

The victory was beckoning for the Super Falcons to the dismay of the home crowd, who packed the Suncorp Stadium. The home side did manage to pull one back from a header by Alanna Kennedy after the 90th minute. The goal ended the game.

Nigeria registered Africa’s first win in this tournament. The result spiced things up in Group B with three countries vying for the two knockout spots.

Nigeria and Canada are equal on points. As things stand, Nigeria leads Group B with four points and a superior goal difference of plus three goals, followed by Canada with four points and plus two goals and then Australia with three points.
