ROME: His firing comes after a poor run in the league and knockout competitions.

Jose Mourinho has been fired as a head coach of AS Roma, which plies its trade in the Italian Serie A. The club released a statement on Tuesday 16 January, indicating that Mourinho and his coaching stuff are effectively out of the club.

Jose was in charge of the club from the eternal city for two-and-half-years.

His firing comes after a poor run in the league and knockout competitions, which includes a single win in their last six league matches and being dumped out of the Coppa Italia by their city rivals Lazio, the match in which he was sent off.

Given the poor run, Roma lies on the 9th position on the log table with 29 points, 22 points behind his former club Inter Milan, who are at the summit after 20 matches.

The club’s American owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said that change was the best thing for the club.

“We would [like] to thank Jose on behalf of all of us in Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,’’ read their statement, posted on the club’s website.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interest of the club,” they add, “We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”

The renowned, yet controversial Portuguese joined the Gialorrosi in May 2021. He had relative success with the club, leading them to their first-ever European cup, the Conference League to be precise, in 2022 and reaching the final of the Europa league, but they fell short on penalties against Spanish La Liga club Sevilla.

A look at Mourinho’s managerial career

The Special One, as Mourinho is affectionately known, has a decorated career, which begun at Benfica in the 2000s. However, he made a name for himself in Europe while managing their rivals, FC Porto, leading them to an unexpected UEFA champions league title in 2004 with South African legend Benni Mccarthy in their books.

Buoyed by his successes in Portugal, Mourinho jetted off for Chelsea in the English Premier League (EPL), England. At his arrival at Chelsea, he uttered the famous words: “I am European champion I think I am the Special One”.

The 60-year-old led Chelsea to back-to-back league titles, a spell in which he cultivated an intense rivalry with former Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger.

Following later disappointments at the club, he headed to Italy, where he lead Inter Milan to a famous treble in 2010 that included the champions league and Serie A title.

His sterling work at the club earned him a deserved move to the Bernabeu with Real Madrid enlisting his service to help them to stop Barcelona FC’s reign of terror in the LA Liga, a Spanish top-tier league. In Spain he was involved in another bitter rivalry with current Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola.

He was able to win the league title with a record 100 points tally in in 2012. Mourinho returned to the Premier League to his beloved Chelsea and won this third EPL title, before leaving them for Manchester United where he won his first-ever Europa Cup.

Following his sacking, engendered by, among other things, his row with senior players, including Paul Pogba, who has also left United, Mourinho joined Tottenham Hotspur, before signing for Roma in 2021.
