MikeyNash also mentioned that it was tough for him to convince his ‘African’ parents to pursue a career in music.

Tinashe Mike Sibanda (21), who is better known as ‘MikeyNash’ is a rapper & songwriter, born in Zimbabwe but grew up in South Africa, Cape Town. He is currently studying for a BCom Degree in Business Development and Management at the University of Johannesburg.

“I knew I could rap when I did Drake’s “The Motto” remix and made my classmates listen to it. People would say I sound like Drake, Big Sean & Tyga,” he recalls.

The rapper started off with a demo ‘Been That’ during his matric (2017). He then took a gap year in 2018 and worked as a waiter, which helped him save up money to shoot his first official music video of ‘With The Gang’. The song was later aired on music video channel Trace Urban and Channel O.

“I made my dad listen to my music and he said: ‘I see potential but make music your mom can listen to,’ MikeyNash said.

“If you listen to my music, you’d realize that I don’t swear because I believe that every song that I make, my mom must listen to it and be able to enjoy it,” the rapper added.

It is amusing to have a young African rapper like MikeyNash that are determined to change hip hop norms by making their music without including vulgar language.

MikeyNash released his first EP ‘Ntwana Relaxa’ last year, shot a video on-campus (UJ), and also it was featured on Channel O. He said that he had a lot of doors opening for him in 2020.

“I had Emtee come to my house, met Dj Speedsta, Frank Casino. I also had the likes of Major League commenting on my music,” he said.

Like most upcoming artists, Tinashe encountered difficulties in finding exposure and the right producer, which almost led him to lose heart in the music industry.

“People buy their ways into the industry. There isn’t fairness,” he stated.

The rapper said Nasty C became his inspiration. “Finding out that Nasty C is South African, 2 years older than me and still making it big in the game, motivated me to follow my dreams,” the rapper said.

MikeyNash also mentioned that it was tough for him to convince his ‘African’ parents to pursue a career in music.

He then ensured to further his studies at UJ as a sign of gratitude to his parents for a pleasant upbringing and will of course use the degree to his advantage to advance his music career.

The young, yet full-of-life rapper and UJ student plans on making a collaboration with SA musicians such as Frank Casino, Casper Nyovest, Nasty C, Shekhinah and many more.
