PORT ELIZABETH: The experienced football administrator-turned-coach has the necessary coaching badges.
Chippa United unveiled Morgan Mammila as the club’s head coach for the 2023/24 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season. He will be assisted by a loyal Chippa servant, Siyabulela Gwambi. The gentlemen are entrusted with guiding the club to a top-eight finish and winning silverware for the Port Elizabeth-based club.
“Mammila brings an abundance of experience and proven leadership to the role,” said a Chippa United chairman, Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi, lauding the coach in a club statement.
The experienced football administrator-turned-coach has the necessary coaching badges. He holds Confederation of African Football (CAF) D and C licences.
The coach has joined Chippa from Swallows FC, where he was a technical advisor, working with The Birds’ coach Musa Nyatama. Mammila is no stranger to the Eastern Cape based-club, where he had a short stint in what was a dramatic 2022/23 season for the Chilli Boys.
The club had four coaches at different stages in one campaign. Its chairman is notorious for being ‘trigger happy’ when it comes to coaches.
In fact, chopping and changing coaches is a norm at the Chilli Boys. The new coach had his views on the matter heard recently in the media.
“I was the first coach to win four games in [a] row for the club,” he said, reflecting on his first stint at the club. He went further to pose a vexing question thus: “Why can’t I be the first coach to start and finish the season at Chippa?”
The Polokwane-born coach had a decent short spell at Chippa. He did what no other coach has ever done at the club, winning four consecutive games. All in all, he was in charge of 12 games at the club, winning five, drawing four and losing three.
