JOHANNESBURG: The popular songwriter and ‘Loliwe’ hitmaker face tax-related charges as a representative of her company ‘Zahara Trading Pty Ltd’.

The National Prosecution Authorities (NPA) has found Bulelwa Mkutukana popularly known as Zahara, guilty of failing to appear in the Johannesburg Palm Ridge Specialized Commercial Crimes Court pending tax-related charges of her company.

According to the South African Revenue Services (SARS), Zahara is charged related to non-submission of personal and income-tax returns as requested by the revenue board.

In a statement issued by the NPA, the songwriter was supposed to appear before the magistrate last month on 19, April 2021 but failed to do so, instead, she appeared on 07, June 2021.

Before proceeding to the matter in her personal capacity, the magistrate first heard her evidence of failure to respond in the court summons in April. State prosecutor in the Johannesburg Specialized Tax Unit Ms Nerissa Reddy argued that Zahara’s reasons for not appearing to the court were highly unreasonable.

“Mkutukana only appeared in court when the commercial crimes investigators begun to trace her whereabouts.

“Her celebrity status did not give her immunity from facing justice, justice should be meted out equally as everyone is equal in the eyes of the law and should treated such,” she said.

The songbird was found guilty and fined R1500 or face three months imprisonment for her defiance of the law. She was released on bail with conditions and was warned to appear in the next proceedings on 25, June 2021.
