CAPE TOWN: Spurs are fighting to return to the DSTV Premiership in a round-robin tournament with Maritzburg United and Casric Stars.
Cape Town Spurs lead the pack in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) promotion playoffs. Spurs are undefeated after two rounds of games have been played amongst the DSTV Premiership hopefuls. Shaun Bartlett’s team has beaten both Casric Stars and Maritzburg United in a fight for top-flight football.
The men from the Cape lead with six points, followed by the Team of Choice with three points and at the bottom is Casric Stars, who are yet to register a win in the mini-league. It is a tough league, as indicated by the number of goals scored in the six games, four goals to be precise.
They indicate that no team wants to lose; they go to the matches protecting what they have. Hence, everything is so tight, which is understandable given what is at stake.
Casric Stars are worst off, losing two matches on the trot. This has certainly put them on the back foot and have all to do to overtake Spurs and United in the mini-league.
Fadlu Davids’ team started well with a win against the Stars, but they fell to Spurs away at the Athlone Stadium. Stars and Maritzburg need to up their game in their next encounters to close the gap between them and the team from the Mother City.
The team from Gauteng, namely Stars, is away in their next game in Cape Town, taking on Spurs today in round three of the promotion playoffs.
A win for the Cape team will put them much closer to the land of milk and honey, the DSTV Premiership, and a defeat for Casric will mean more trouble for them and could mean another season in the National First Division (NFD), better known as the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
