ENGLAND: Manchester City are on the brink of making history under the Spanish maestro Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City kept their treble season aspirations alive by defeating arch-rivals Manchester United in the Football Association Cup (FA Cup) final this past weekend, winning a 190th Manchester Derby by 2-1.

City are on the brink of making history under Pep Guardiola. The Citizens could finally claim the biggest club cup competition in the world, the UEFA champions league. In doing so, they will complete an unprecedented treble in the club’s history.

The reigning English Premier League (EPL) champions, who ended the Red Devils’ hopes of winning their second silverware in one season – as they won the English League Cup (Carabao Cup) – had a dominant FA Cup run in the competition, conceding a solitary goal and scoring a whopping 19 goals in six matches.

The FA Cup triumph means that the Citizens could have their biggest season ever as a club. Guardiola’s men are one win away from winning the EPL, the FA Cup and the UEFA champions league in one season.

Standing on their path is Internazionale Milan, a club that will be playing in their first champions league final since winning the competition under Jose Mourinho in 2010. Although Inter also have a point to prove in Europe, City are favourites in every game and the same will be the case in the final.

Boasting the firepower of Erling Haaland, who is this season’s top scorer in the champions league with 12 goals, they are near untouchable. Incidentally, they lost their only final against Chelsea, which also plies its trade in the EPL, in 2021.

For the Citizens, the match is important at three levels, namely the players, the club, and the coach. To be considered among the big players in Europe, the EPL champions need to win this final, as their impressive domestic success has been overshadowed by an underwhelming performance in the continent.

For the club to be mentioned among the best clubs in Europe, such as Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United, it should win the continental competition. The rest of Europe should witness their coronation. If they fail against Inter, then they would carry a negative connotation of being domestic bullies who cannot measure up against big clubs in Europe.

Equally, Guardiola needs to win the champions league with the club to cement his legacy as one of the best coaches in history. The former Bayern Munich coach won the competition twice with FC Barcelona, a Spanish club.

Since leaving the Catalans, he has not lifted the trophy, for which he is heavily criticised. His nemesis Jose Mourinho’s loyalists always point to his failure in Europe outside FC Barcelona.

If there is ever a ripe moment for the Citizens to win the champions league is now. They dumped the competition’s most successful club, Real Madrid, in the semi-final. This should be an omen that City are here to claim their rightful seat at the table among the best in Europe.
