PRETORIA: This the club does to create a hostile environment for the Moroccans.
Mamelodi Sundowns has called on its supporters to come out in big numbers on a second leg African Football League (AFL) final against Wydad Athletic Club on Sunday, 12 November 2023, at the Loftus Versveld Stadium, Tshwane.
To pull a large crowd, Sundowns will open the gates at the stadium for free for supporters dressed in the club’s colours. This the club does to create a hostile environment for the Moroccans. The Yellow Nation will have to collect tickets at the stadium before the match kicks off.
Rulani Mokwena’s charges have all to do in order to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit. To their advantage, however, they did score a crucial away goal, which could be important at the end of the match.
Downs made it into the inaugural AFL final by eliminating Egyptian giants, Al Ahly SC, 1-0 (on aggregate) in the semi-finals. That victory against The Red Devils could be the confidence booster they need going to the final. Much to its advantage again, Sundowns has proven in the past that they can get the better of North African clubs within the South African shores.
The AFL, which is backed by the world governing football body, FIFA, is the quickest way for the richest and biggest clubs in the African continent to rake in staggering sums of money. With only six matches needed to be played in order to claim a massive $4 million (R75 million) winner’s cheque, the cash incentive is huge in this tournament. The runner-ups will drown their sorrows with $3 million (R55 million).
If the Brazilians are able to lift the cup this Sunday, they could stand a good chance to win a continental double as they are still involved in the CAF Champions League, which they last won in 2016 under Pitso Mosimane’s tutelage.
