JOHANNESBURG: Gonzalez’s signing follows the parting ways between Chiefs and their Burundian striker Bonfil-Caleb Bimenyama.

Kaizer Chiefs have signed South American forward Efmamjjasond Gonzalez Palacios to strengthen their striking force for the 2023/24 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season. Amakhosi made the announcement on Thursday, 17 August. However, the player is yet to arrive in South Africa.

The Colombian, who was plying his trade in the Bolivian Primera Division for Real Santa Cruz, is a second South American signee this season for Chiefs following Edson Castillo. According to the club statement, the player is due to arrive on the South African shores soon.

Gonzalez, who had a relatively good showing upfront for Real Santa Cruz in 2023, played 16 matches and had a return of eight goals.

He would have to fire for the Glamour boys in order for the Naturena based-club to compete and challenge for cup titles this season.

Gonzalez’s signing follows the parting ways between Chiefs and their Burundian striker Bonfil-Caleb Bimenyama yesterday, apparently to open up the allotted five spots for foreign nationals.

The Colombian has joined a foreign list that comprises Thatayaone Ditlhokwe (Botswana), Edson Castillo (Venezuela), Edmilson Dove (Mozambique) and Christian Saile (Democratic Republic of Congo).

The Soweto giants are experiencing an eight-year-long trophy drought, their longest ever. For Molefi Ntseki’s side to end the trophy drought, the forwards would have to score more goals.

Ntseki, who has to deal with fans and media expectations, will travel with his side to Mbombela Stadium to face TS Galaxy in the DSTV Premiership on Sunday, 20 August.
