ATHENS: The club from Manchester went to the match as the favourites to lift the Super Cup.
Manchester City have won their first UEFA Super Cup after coming from behind and won the match 5-4 on penalties, as it had finished 1-1 in a regulated time at the Karaiskakis Stadium, Greece.
City, who won the UEFA champions league in the 2022/23 season, laboured to secure their first trophy of the new season as Sevilla proved to be worthy opponents on the night.
The club from Manchester went to the match as the favourites to lift the Super Cup. However, they needed the penalty shootouts to prevail.
The Europa League champions Sevilla opened the scoring first, thanks to a header by Youssef En-Neysri in the 25th minute and took the 1-0 lead to the break.
The Spanish La Liga club were the better side in the first half, as they pushed for their second Super Cup title. In the second half, Pep Guardiola’s men started to find their rhythm.
The tempo of the match was slightly better for City as compared to the first half as they pushed for the equaliser. City’s moment came when, as En-Neysri did in the first half for Sevilla, Cole Palmer headed in the equaliser, making it 1-1 in the 63rd minute.
The clubs could not be separated within the regulated time and it was up to the cruelty of the penalty shootout to decide the winner between the two respective European champions.
Guardiola’s men slotted in their allotted five penalties before Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj missed his, thus handing City their first Super Cup title. The loss for Sevilla means that the Spanish club has lost six of their seven Super Cup encounters to the champions league winners. Sevilla have only made it to the Super Cup by winning the Europa League.
Manchester City continues to make history by reaching one milestone after the other. Having won their first champions league cup last season, the club have capped it with the Super Cup.
