JOHANNESBURG: Mr Ramaphosa’s office has confirmed the resignation of deputy president, Mr David Mabuza as a member of parliament.

The move comes weeks after Mr Mabuza requested the president, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa to relieve him of his duties as deputy president. The president had initially asked Mr Mabuza to delay his resignation.

It was reported earlier on Wednesday that Mr Mabuza sent his letter of resignation to the speaker of the National Assembly on Tuesday evening, meaning the country does not have a deputy president.

Confirming the resignation, presidency spokesperson Mr Vincent Magwenya said: “This follows his request to President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down from the position of deputy president, which the president announced in his reply to the state of the nation address on February 16 2023.”

Meanwhile, Mr Mabuza resigned as a Member of Parliament on Tuesday. According to the ANC Chief Whip, Ms Pemmy Majodina, Mr Mabuza resigned and handed in his resignation letter to Parliament.

Mr Mabuza’s decision to resign has made way for ANC deputy president, Mr Paul Mashatile to be appointed as the deputy president of the country after being elected at the ANC Elective Conference in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

Mr Mashatile was sworn in as MP last month while Mr Mabuza’s resignation comes amid Mr Ramaphosa’s imminent Cabinet reshuffle.

“The Speaker wishes Mr. Mabuza well in his future endeavours and thanked him for his service to the country during his term both as a Member of Parliament and Member of the Executive,” the statement said.

It has been reported that the president has been consulting widely, including with the ANC’s alliance partners.

Yesterday, it was reported that finance minister, Mr Enoch Godongwana was sworn in as a Member of Parliament on Tuesday, making way for Ramaphosa to appoint a non-MP as part of his Cabinet.
