POLOKWANE: A brace by Brazilian midfielder Costa was enough for Sundowns to put away the newly promoted NFD champions in their backyard
Unstoppable Mamelodi Sundowns made it six wins out of six matches in the DSTV Premiership after a 2-0 win away at Peter Mokaba Stadium against Polokwane City on Wednesday, 30 August.
A brace by Brazilian midfielder Lucas Ribeiro Costa was enough for Sundowns to put away the newly promoted National First Division (NFD) champions in their backyard.
Costa, who scored in each half to complete his brace, has been impressive since joining Sundowns this season. The South American has found the back of the net on six occasions in six league matches, thereby proving to be a good signing by the defending league champions.
Masandawana, who are early pace setters at the top of the league table with 18 points, have continued from where they had left off in the 2022/23 DSTV Premiership by steamrolling opponents.
Rulani Mokwena’s side has gone on a 29-match winning streak and are chasing Kaizer Chiefs’ record of winning 31 PSL matches.
If Sundowns maintain this level of consistency, they may not only run away with the league but also break their own record of last season when they won the league title just after 23 league matches.
Having collected maximum points in all their matches so far, it appears that Mokwena’s side has no competition in the PSL and are poised to win their seventh league title in a row.
Now the Chloorkop-based club will shift focus from the league to domestic cup competition over the weekend. They will travel to the FNB Stadium, where they will come up against Kaizer Chiefs in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final on Saturday.
