JOHANNESBURG: NWC comprises the party’s top seven officials, including the president, Mr Ramaphosa and his deputy Mr Mashatile.
The African National Congress (ANC) continues to hold political induction of its over 80 members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) at the Esselen Park Conference centre, east of Johannesburg later on Thursday.
It is also expected to elect members of the national working committee then conclude with holding ANC Lekgotla which will chart a way forward and discuss amongst others, the reconfiguration of the cabinet.
The NWC comprises the party’s top seven officials, including the president, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa and his deputy Mr Paul Mashatile who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the ANC.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the induction of the new NEC members elected at the party’s 55th national conference last month, the ANC spokesperson, Mr Pule Mabe outlined their programme.
The party’s secretary-general, Mr Fikile Mbalula had to clarify the surprise visit of the US Treasury Secretary, Ms Janet Yellen who came all the way to supposedly meet with the minister of energy and mineral resources, Mr Gwede Mantashe.
However, Mr Mbalula was quick to dismiss any suggestions that Ms Yellen was there to provide the direction of the ANC policy position. According to Mr Mbalula, “the national chair did brief us that they have agreed to meet here as a meeting point with the secretary of the United States of America, so it was really a government engagement.
“So if you have any follow up on what they discussed, you can talk to the government,” he said.
It among others wants to use political induction starting to unite the largely divided organisation ahead of the 2024 elections. After the conclusion of its conference and the delivery of its January 8 Statement in Bloemfontein earlier this month, party deputy president Mr Paul Mashatile outlined their next course of action. All these gatherings will then be followed by the Cabinet Lekgotla next Wednesday.
The outcomes of the meetings will form the basis of President Cyril Ramphosa’s State of the Nation Address (Sona).
