JOHANNESBURG: Mr Makhubo was mayor of Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg and chairman of the ANC of Greater region.
Condolences continue to pour for the family of the late Johannesburg Mayor, Mr Geoffrey Makhubo after it was recently by this publication reported that the 53-year-old politician had passed on, due to Covid-19 complications.
Mr Makhubo has been taken to hospital after he tested positive in late June.
He went into self-quarantine on 20 June, during which time he committed to continue monitoring and providing guidance on work being carried out to contain and manage the spread of Covid-19 in Johannesburg.
His passing has sent shock waves in the country and political parties have expressed their condolences after the acting Executive Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development, Ms Eunice Mgcina, confirmed through a statement that, “It is a sad duty to confirm that the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, [Mr] Geoffrey Makhubo has indeed succumbed to Covid-19”.
“We had hoped that the Executive Mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods. Sadly, it was not to be. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother, and the rest of his family, friends, and comrades,” she said.
“I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the colleagues, friends, and family of Johannesburg Mayor, [Mr] Geoff Makhubo, following reports of his passing today. [Mr] Makhubo was admitted to hospital following Covid-19 related complications this past Saturday,” said former Joburg mayor, and now the president of the newly formed party, ActionSA, Mr Herman Mashaba.
He also extended his condolences to the Mr Makhubo family and the African National Congress (ANC).
“In these difficult times, we are reminded of how fragile life can be and of our shared humanity. May [Mr] Makhubo rest in peace in the comfort of his Creator,” Mr Mashaba said.
The leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Ms Leah Knott said, “The DA in Johannesburg would like to express our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the Executive Mayor, [Mr] Geoff Makhubo, who sadly passed away earlier from Covid-19-related complications.”

Who was Makhubo
Mr Moloantoa Geoffrey Makhubo was born on 8 February 1968, in Soweto in the previous Transvaal Province. He obtained a BCom Degree from the University of Witwatersrand in 1990 and fulfilled many Advanced Management courses.
He was a South African politician and member of the ruling party, the ANC as a regional chair in Greater Johannesburg.
