PARIS: Romano also reports that the club is not keen on losing the player for free; if he does not sign he is for sale.

Paris Saint Germain (PSG) forward Kylian Mbappe has reportedly indicated his intention – through a letter to the club – to not trigger a one-year extension in his contract until 2025, according to French publication L’Equipe. His contract will expire in June 2024.

The latest developments on the contractual situation of the French star, who is the club’s flagship player, have sent the football world into a frenzy. Certainly, Mbappe’s decision has not been warmly welcomed in Paris.

In 2017, the Parisians spent in the region of €180 million to lure the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner into the club’s fold from Monaco. PSG now are at a point where they have to try to convince their vice-captain to exercise his one-year extension or allow him to honour what is left of his contract and then re-negotiate a new one when he is a free agent.

The latter option poses problems for the club. To begin with, it puts it at risk of losing the 25-year-old for free, as he could join a club of his choice. Another problem for PSG, if Mbappe starts a 2023/24 season without a contract extension, is that he could sign a pre-contract with another club come January 2024.

According to a renowned transfer market specialist, Fabrizio Romano, PSG is not happy that the French international has written the letter because the two parties have agreed that if the player had not extended his contract by 01 August 2023 it would be a non-renewal. Romano also reports that the club is not keen on losing the player for free; if he does not sign the one-year extension, he is for sale now.

This would open a bidding war for Mbappe, who has long been hunted by Real Madrid, as PSG would want to recover its returns on investment on him. With the Ligue 1 champions having previously turned down two lucrative offers for him by the Spanish giants, things are now different because the player is not keen on extending his stay in Paris.

Los Blancos, who are long-time admirers of the forward, are searching for a replacement for their former captain Karim Benzema. The Frenchman left the Spanish giants for Al Ittihad, the Saudi Professional League (SPL) champions, as a free agent.

English Premier League (EPL) players Harry Kane (Tottenham Spurs) and Kai Havertz (Chelsea) have been heavily linked with Real Madrid, but the latest developments on Mbappe’s contract might change things for Carlo Ancelotti’s club. The French superstar is a different cattle of fish and might force the club to break the bank.
